Præge is an old Danish word for the act known as minting - striking a new coin. At the same time præge is also a verb, which means to influence. The word is closely related to the word imprægnering - to imprint or preserve something.
Præge is a project developed in collaboration with the musician Excelsior for her album Fit for Fiction and was presented on stage as a ghostly feminine presence sending homages to the many women who have fallen prey to bad acts of feudal lords old and new and misogyny.
Taking its aesthetic departure from the combadge, knight’s shields, coin design, plant architecture and religious banners the sculptural object blends together futuristic, pop cultural, commercial and historic references in an effort to make clear the connections between economy, environmental resources and gender and as a token wishes to help usher in a new era of holistic value logistics.
Præge is made out of recycled metals found and gifted to the local melter (Jakob Halskov) in Aarhus and is cast in an alloy called nordic gold. The nordic gold alloy was developed by the finnish scientist Marinn Sundberg in the 80’s while she was working for a big finnish metal company. It was developed for the euro coins and was chosen especially for its anti-allergenic, anti-microbial and anti-corrosive properties.
